Each year, Doing Art Together serves about 3,000 students by providing over 1200 hours of day-school and after-school programming in all 5 boroughs of New York City. In many of these locations DAT was the only form of art that the students receive.
50% of our work takes place in Title 1 Elementary schools, and 50% of our work is in alternative education sites; Youth Detention Centers, Hospitals, and Homeless Youth Shelters.
Our residencies give students new creative experiences with emphasis on cultures of the world, art history, and experiential learning. In one program last year, ‘My Passport to the Arts’, students in the South Bronx were able to Skype with visual arts graduates from London, Portugal, Barcelona, and Brazil. Through the use of a PDA device and a computer in the classroom, DAT Teaching Artists worked with students to link the exposure to new cultures with hands-on art projects like the creation of clay cups for tea time, fashion design that reflected the vibrant colors of Spanish culture, and original paintings that encouraged students to design their own opera houses. Students also experienced the many cultural worlds of NYC on field trips to New York Botanical Garden, DC Moore Gallery, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.
MAKE AN IMPACT! With your help, DAT will bring quality art experiences to youth and families with our Pre-K through Pre-College residencies, one-day art workshops, and art projects at back-to-school nights, family days and festivals.
We continue to nurture partnerships that provide life-changing experiences for youth with the intent of showing students that their creative talents and positive self-expression can only help to redefine their futures and the futures of those around them.
Donate Today! Your generosity and advocacy make our work possible. Thank you in advance for your commitment to help Doing Art Together continue our mission to bring high quality visual arts education to the students of New York City!
Opening Minds, Transforming Lives and Enriching Communities.
We use art as an entry point for learning for the participants and a tool for engagement for parents and families to get involved in their children’s education.
